Sikorsky Airport Soil Treatability Study
Soil Solutions performed an in-depth study to determine the perfect fit reagent to stabilize soil at the Sikorsky Airport.

Project Description
The City of Bridgeport needed a soil treatment solution to improve the Runway Safety Area of Runway 24 of the Igor I. Sikorsky Memorial Airport. The soil at the project site had hazardous waste levels in excess of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)’s limitation of 5.0 milligrams per liter.
Sikorsky Airport needed a cost-effective soil treatment solution that would help them mitigate hazards associated with high levels of lead. The project was time-sensitive: a 2,000 ft. section of Main Street was to be relocated to the project area, and RMW removal had to be completed prior to this realignment.
The Challenge
Primary Contaminant: Inorganic Lead
In order to decontaminate and stabilize the subject soils at the airport, Soil Solutions needed to perform a treatability study. By taking test samples of the soil and trying a range of different reagents, we could determine the right solution for Sikorsky Airport's unique challenges.

Our Solutions
Reagent Selection
For this treatability study, Soil Solutions utilized four reagents:
- Cement Kiln Dust
- SSTT-GTSP
- TRAPPS™
- SSTT-CS
These reagents were chosen for their field-proven ability to reduce the lead concentration to less than 5.0 mg/l TCLP. Each of the four reagents was tested in increasing concentrations to determine the cost-effectiveness of each mix design.

Our Approach
To determine the best treatment approach, samples were collected using a direct push drill rig. The six soil sample locations for use in the bench scale treatability study were located within the top 4 feet of the ground surface. All six samples were sent for pre-bench scale baseline analyses which included percent solids, pH, organic content, total lead, and TCLP lead.
Based on the results of the six samples, three samples were selected for treatability. The selection was made considering the TCLP results, the organic content, and the pH of the six samples. The three samples selected for inclusion in the bench scale study were each homogenized and separated into 12 aliquots for treatability testing.
The Results
After testing the three samples with the four selected reagants, Soil Solutions recommended that the City of Bridgeport utilize Granulated Triple Phosphate (GTSP) to stabilize the soil at the Sikorsky Airport. GTSP was uniquely suited for this application because of its proven effectiveness and lower risks compared to other options.
In addition, by treating the soil in-situ, GTSP provides a 65% reduction in hazardous waste disposal costs.
Benefits of GTSP for This Project
Proven effectiveness meeting cleanup criteria in bench scale testing in low doses
Efficient to store and handle, no dust control needed
Fewer risks associated with material handling of a non-toxic reagent
Reliable and consistent reagent supply
Reduced hazardous waste disposal costs by 65%
